Sustainability — Flores Phinisi’s Environmental & Community Commitments

Sustainability & Community Impact

The Komodo National Park and the surrounding Flores Sea represent one of the most biodiverse and fragile marine ecosystems on Earth. At Flores Phinisi, we believe that operating in this paradise is a privilege that comes with a profound responsibility. Sustainability is not an afterthought; it is a core principle that guides every decision we make, from our operations and partnerships to our community engagements. Our goal is to ensure that the natural and cultural wonders of this region can be enjoyed for generations to come.

Our Commitment is Threefold: Protect, Empower, Educate.

1. Environmental Protection & Conservation

We are committed to minimizing our footprint and actively contributing to the preservation of the marine environment.

  • Financial Contributions: A portion of the revenue from every Flores phinisi charter is donated directly to our local conservation partners, including the Komodo Survival Program and The Nature Conservancy Indonesia, to support their vital on-the-ground research and protection efforts.
  • Zero Single-Use Plastics: All our vessels have a strict no single-use plastic policy. We provide guests with reusable water bottles and use onboard water filtration systems. All provisions are sourced with minimal packaging.
  • Rigorous Waste Management: We enforce a strict “pack it in, pack it out” philosophy. All waste is segregated onboard and transported back to Labuan Bajo for proper, certified disposal. Nothing is ever discharged into the sea.
  • Reef-Safe Practices: We use only reef-safe sunscreens and cleaning products. Our captains are mandated to use designated mooring buoys to prevent anchor damage to coral reefs, a critical practice within the Komodo National Park.
  • Carbon Offsetting: We meticulously track the fuel consumption of every charter. Through our partnership with a VERRA-certified Indonesian carbon offset provider, we invest in reforestation projects in Kalimantan to offset 110% of our carbon emissions.

2. Community Empowerment & Economic Benefit

We believe that sustainable tourism must directly benefit the local communities who are the traditional stewards of this land and sea.

  • Local Employment: We are proud that over 90% of our vessel crews and ground staff are hired from local communities in Flores and the surrounding islands. We are committed to fair wages, safe working conditions, and professional development, ensuring that tourism provides stable, long-term careers. All staff are covered by BPJS Ketenagakerjaan (social security).
  • Local Sourcing: Whenever possible, we source our provisions—fresh fish, organic vegetables, and local coffee—directly from farmers and fishermen’s cooperatives in and around Labuan Bajo. This keeps the economic benefits of tourism within the local community.
  • Support for Traditional Crafts: We partner with local artisans, such as the women’s weaving cooperative in Papagarang village, to supply authentic, handmade souvenirs and amenities for our guests. We ensure a fair trade price is paid, supporting the preservation of cultural heritage.

3. Guest & Staff Education

We aim to transform our guests into ambassadors for conservation by providing meaningful educational experiences.

  • Onboard Expertise: Many of our charters are accompanied by an expert guide or our Marine Biologist, who provides engaging presentations on the region’s unique ecology, wildlife, and conservation challenges.
  • Responsible Wildlife Interaction: Our guides are rigorously trained to enforce the Komodo National Park’s code of conduct. We maintain respectful distances from wildlife, especially Komodo dragons, and educate our guests on why practices like feeding animals are harmful.
  • Cultural Immersion Briefings: Before visiting local villages, guests receive a briefing on cultural etiquette and respectful interaction, ensuring that our visits are positive and welcome experiences for the community.

Our journey towards becoming a fully sustainable operator is ongoing. We continuously review our practices, seeking new ways to innovate and improve, ensuring that a voyage with Flores Phinisi is not just a luxury vacation, but a positive force for the future of Flores.
