Bio: Budi is the visionary behind Flores Phinisi. Having spent 15 years managing some of Indonesia’s most iconic luxury resorts, including properties for Aman and Four Seasons, he saw an opportunity to bring that same level of service to the sea. A passionate diver, Budi’s deep network and unwavering commitment to quality are our cornerstones. He personally vets every partner vessel and itinerary against a rigorous 115-point checklist. This audit covers everything from engine room maintenance logs and crew certification verification to food safety protocols and the quality of the onboard wine selection. He ensures they meet his exacting standards before they are offered to our clients.

Credentials: STCW 95 Certified, Diploma in Maritime Business (Politeknik Ilmu Pelayaran Semarang), 12 years in Southeast Asia yacht charter logistics.

Bio: Dewi is the master of logistics, the calm center of our complex operations. Her experience managing charter fleets in Indonesia and Thailand makes her invaluable. Dewi oversees everything from crew scheduling for over 120 staff members to guest transfers and complex provisioning, often coordinating shipments of specialty items from Bali. She has a deep understanding of the regulatory landscape, working with the KSOP (Harbour Master) in Labuan Bajo to secure the Surat Persetujuan Berlayar (sailing permit) for every voyage. This critical document requires a detailed passenger manifest and must be filed 24 hours in advance, a process she manages flawlessly for every single trip.

Gede developed and now leads our mandatory 3-week training program for all onboard guides. This intensive curriculum includes modules on Komodo dragon behavior, coral reef ecology, and the cultural history of the Manggarai and Ngada peoples. He has personal relationships with community leaders, allowing our guests unique access to experiences like traditional Caci whip dances or visits to the spider-web rice fields of Cancar, all conducted with the utmost cultural respect.

Dr. Anya Sari, Ph.D.

Marine Biologist & Sustainability Officer

Credentials: Ph.D. in Marine Biology (Institut Pertanian Bogor), lead author on a 2018 study on Manta Ray conservation in the Komodo region published in the ‘Journal of Marine Ecology’.

She liaises with organizations like Manta Trust, ensuring our operations contribute to vital citizen science and research. Dr. Anya leads our sustainability audits, which monitor greywater discharge, ensure compliance with Komodo National Park zoning regulations, and have helped our partner fleet achieve an 80% reduction in single-use plastics since 2020. Her presence transforms a beautiful vacation into a meaningful educational experience.

The enduring legacy of the phinisi

Imagine the sun-warmed teak deck beneath your bare feet, the gentle sway of the ocean, and the silhouette of ancient volcanic islands rising from the turquoise expanse – this is the sensory prelude to a truly exceptional phinisi adventure with our team. These magnificent vessels, handcrafted by master boat builders from South Sulawesi, represent centuries of maritime tradition. Each phinisi is a work of art, intricate joinery and the deep understanding of the sea passed down through generations. Our specialists meticulously select and maintain these wooden marvels, ensuring every detail, from the polished brass fittings to the intricately carved stern, speaks of authentic Indonesian heritage while embracing the highest standards of modern luxury and safety.

Beyond their remarkable aesthetics, the phinisi’s unique design and robust construction make them the ideal platform for exploring the remote reaches of the Indonesian archipelago. Their shallow draft allows access to secluded coves and pristine beaches inaccessible to larger ships, while their impressive sail plan offers an exceptional connection to the elements. Our team’s intimate knowledge of these vessels, combined with decades of experience navigating these specific waters, guarantees a journey that is not only opulent but also deeply respectful of the phinisi’s historical significance and its seamless integration into the natural world.

Crafting bespoke journeys through the archipelago

While the allure of iconic destinations like Komodo National Park is undeniable, our expertise extends far beyond the well-trodden path. Our team excels in curating truly bespoke itineraries that reveal the lesser-known spots of Flores and its surrounding islands. Leveraging our deep local connections and extensive reconnaissance, we can guide you to secret snorkeling spots teeming with vibrant marine life, pristine white-sand beaches where you’ll be the only footprints, and authentic village encounters that offer genuine insight into local culture. Whether your passion lies in underwater photography, exploring ancient volcanic landscapes, or simply unwinding in exceptional tranquility, we tailor every aspect of your journey to your desires.

This level of personalization is only possible through our team’s on-the-ground presence and nuanced understanding of the region’s ever-changing conditions. From currents around the Komodo National Park’s 29 islands to securing exclusive access to remote anchorages, our specialists handle every logistical detail with precision. We pride ourselves on creating seamless experiences, ensuring that your journey is not just a vacation, but a profound exploration of one of the world’s most biodiverse and culturally rich environments, all while maintaining the highest standards of comfort and privacy.

A commitment to conservation and community

Our passion for the Flores Phinisi experience is intrinsically linked to a profound respect for the natural beauty and vibrant communities of Indonesia. As custodians of these extraordinary voyages, we are deeply committed to sustainable tourism practices that protect the delicate marine ecosystems and support local livelihoods. Komodo National Park, a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1991, is a prime example of the precious environments we aim to preserve. Our operations adhere to strict environmental guidelines, from waste management protocols to responsible anchoring practices, ensuring our footprint is minimal and our impact positive.

Beyond environmental stewardship, we believe in fostering meaningful connections with the local communities that welcome us. Our team actively engages in initiatives that provide direct benefits, such as sourcing fresh produce from local markets, employing local guides and crew members, and supporting community-based conservation projects. When you travel with Flores Phinisi, you are not just embarking on a luxury adventure; you are contributing to a sustainable future for these remarkable islands and their people, ensuring that their beauty and culture can be enjoyed by generations to come.
